DeleteYour phone can perfectly serve as modem through USB tethering just as you did and it will work just fine.
What you should do is this, just make sure you set your phones APN to that of the normal MTN and it will also work perfectly for you, and also make sure you set your phone to 3G only.
It is not a must that you should use modem only.
