LTE, OTG, OTA, SNS, and NFC: What do These Hi-Tech Features Even Stand for And What do They Actually do for my Smart Devices?

It is no strange that most times you are only familiar with the basic features of your mobile smart devices like the screen sizes and resolution, the pixel sizes of the camera, the processor makes as in Qualcomm Snapdragon or MTK, the sizes of the internal memory and RAM, whether the device is WiFi hotspot enabled or not, the Operating System and other basic specifications.

Apart from these basics features your devices are built on, we all know that today, technology is highly dynamic and we keep seeing new features popping up by the day and being added to those existing ones.

Today, you now see or hear high tech features on your smart devices like the ones mentioned on the topic; LTE, OTG, OTA, SNS, NFC etc.

Though some of you don’t really know what these features are all about and what they do to your devices, but you just see and hear about them.

Recently few persons have asked me the meaning of OTG and NFC, while last week, some others demanded for the meaning of LTE, SNS and OTA.

For that reason, I have decided to use this opportunity to throw light on these features that you often hear about or see these days on smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.

Without further ado, let’s go straight and give you simplified meanings to what each of the features represent or do to your devices.

LTE – LTE stands for Long Term Evolution and it is basically the 4G network technology architecture that you used to hear about. A device with LTE means that that very device has a 4G network support. Those devices also have those other lower network supports as in 2G and 3G network included.

OTG – This stands for On the Go and what that implies is that devices with OTG support USB On the Go. Meaning that with OTG supported devices you can easily use USB devices directly on them, USB devices like your flash drives, printers, scanners etc. without necessarily needing a PC to transfer your files, print and scan documents.

You need a compactible OTG cable for that and some companies even include these cables as part of accessories on your purchases for OTG supported devices or you can get them separately sold in the market.

OTA – OTA stands for Over the Air technology. It is a technology that allows you to receive direct update notifications to your devices and also to be able to update your devices immediately and directly without any PC as far as you have high speed internet connectivity.

SNS – This stands for Social Network Service. When you see or hear that a device has SNS Integration feature, it simply means that the device is enabled to establish social network of people via platforms like Facebook, Twitter, E-mails and other notable social networks.

NFC – NFC stands for Near Field Communication. This is a technology that is quite similar to that of your Bluetooth but varies in number of ways. With NFC enabled devices, you will be able to transfer data to another NFC device in a more secured manner but at a very short range.

Apart from seamless contents sharing, you can also use NFC powered devices to pay bills wirelessly or even use your device as electronic traveling ticket on some public transportation systems that has enabled the existing infrastructures.

Unlike Bluetooth, you can easily establish an NFC in matters of seconds without setting up or having to pair devices. And with the power of NFC you can even make use of it when one of the NFC devices for communication is out of battery life.

Finally, with the detailed explanation above on those hi-tech features, I hope from now on, you will be able to identify, differentiate and know what each of the features does to your smart devices anytime you come across them again.

  1. Sure, you are right Edwin. My first 2-3 weeks on the Android operating system where like hell.

Abbreviations like this would most likely get me thinking as to what the full meaning may likely imply especially the LTE, OTG, OTA etc. But that's years now.

Learning they say we do everyday. And going through your post on this just uncovered yet some things I believed to had known but didn't in actual sense.

You are indeed a great writer I must commend, and was great to know you had an article like this posted here.
